As temperatures rise across London, many parents worry about how to keep their babies safe and comfortable, especially during sleep. The NHS states that babies can’t regulate their body temperature as well as adults, so it’s important to help them stay cool while following the safe sleep guidance from the lullaby trust.
Here are some simple ways to keep your little one safe whilst sleeping during hot weather.
Keeping cool when you’re out and about
If you’re taking your baby out in the pram during warm weather:
- Keep the pram in the shade whenever possible.
- Never cover the pram with a blanket or muslin. Although it may seem like it provides shade, it can trap heat inside the pram and reduce airflow, making it much hotter for your baby.
- Use a clip-on sunshade or parasol instead.
- Dress your baby in light, breathable clothing that’s appropriate for the temperature.
- Regularly check your baby’s temperature by feeling their chest or the back of their neck. If they feel hot or sweaty, remove a layer of clothing.
If your baby appears unusually sleepy, unwell, or difficult to wake, move them to a cooler place and seek medical advice if you’re concerned.
Helping your baby sleep safely on hot nights
Warm nights can make it harder for babies to sleep comfortably, but there are several ways to keep them cool while maintaining safe sleep practices.
Keep the room as cool as possible
Ideally, aim for a room temperature between 16Β°C and 20Β°C.
To help keep the room cool:
- Close curtains or blinds during the day to block out direct sunlight.
- Open windows and doors when it’s safe to do so to improve airflow.
- Use a fan to circulate air but position it so it blows away from your baby, not directly onto them.
- Keep a room thermometer nearby so you can monitor the temperature.
Dress your baby for the weather
On hot nights:
- Dress your baby in lightweight clothing or just a nappy if the room is very warm.
- Use lightweight bedding, or no bedding if appropriate.
- If your baby sleeps in a baby sleep bag, always check the manufacturer’s guidance to choose the correct tog rating for the room temperature.
Safe sleep always comes first
Whatever the temperature, continue to follow safer sleep guidance:
- Always place your baby on their back to sleep.
- Use a firm, flat sleep surface.
- Keep the sleep space clear of pillows, quilts, loose blankets and soft toys.
- Avoid letting your baby become overheated.
A final reminder
Heat can be challenging, but a few simple precautions can help keep your baby safe and comfortable. Keeping them well hydrated, avoiding overheating in the pram, and creating a cool sleeping environment can all make a big difference.
If you’re ever worried that your baby is becoming unwell due to the heat, trust your instincts and seek medical advice.
